Andrea Swenson, Board of Education President
Andrea was elected to office in 2012 and will complete her first term in February 2016. She is a past member of the Piedmont Educational Foundation Board; past president of the Wildwood, PMS and PHS Parent Clubs; past APCP President; past chair of The Giving Campaign; co-chair of first Piedmont Every 15 Minutes anti drunk driving program; co-founder of The Piedmont Portal, and member of the Budget Advisory Committee. In 2011 Andrea received the Art Hecht Volunteer of the Year Award. Andrea has an undergraduate degree in History and Literature from Barnard College of Columbia University. She worked in finance for 17 years. Andrea and her husband Paul have two children who attended Piedmont schools K-12.
Sarah Pearson, Board of Education Vice President
Sarah was elected to the Board in February, 2012. She co-chaired the School Parcel Tax campaign in 2009, serves on the District Budget Advisory Committee, and helps with the Giving Campaign and Spring Fling. She is past president of the Piedmont Middle School Parents Club, and has held various positions on the Wildwood Parent Club Board over the past 8 years. She is a facilitator for the Piedmont Parents Network and has served on the Wellness Center Steering Committee since it was founded. Sarah is a pediatrician by training with a special interest in child and adolescent behavior and development. She has been on the board of the Ann Martin Center and researched stress in children at the U.C. Berkeley Child Study Center. She attended Palo Alto public schools and graduated from Harvard College, Stanford Medical School, and completed her pediatric training at the University of Washington. She and her husband, Evan Seevak, have three children who attend PHS and PMS.
Richard Raushenbush, Board of Education Member
Richard was elected to office in 2008 and re-elected in February 2012 for a second term. He is an energy and environmental attorney. He received an A.B. cum laude from Harvard University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School. Prior to assuming public office, Rick served as chair of the Citizens Oversight Committee for the District’s Seismic Safety Construction Program. He and his wife Barbara have a daughter at PHS. Rick’s older boys attended Beach, PMS, and PHS.
Amal Smith, Board of Education Member
Amal was elected to office in 2014. She has worked in higher education for 23 years and is currently a financial management administrator for the University of California, Office of the President, and previously provided consulting services to research universities and non-profit organizations. She served on the Beach Parents Organization as president, vice president, and treasurer; six years on the Piedmont Educational Foundation board, including as president for two years; was a member of the PHS Boosters, the PHS Wellness Center Advisory Board, treasurer for PHS Parents Club, and a facilitator for the Piedmont Parent Network. A member of the District’s Budget Advisory Committee since 2004, she has volunteered on recent school parcel tax campaigns, as well as on the seismic safety bond measure campaign. She has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from UCLA, and an MBA from USC. Amal and her husband Rick raised two sons in Piedmont who have attended Piedmont schools K-12.
Doug Ireland, Board of Education Member
Doug was elected to office in 2014. He is retired from a 25-year career as a manager in finance in SF, Tokyo, Chicago and New York. He served a six-year term on the Piedmont Education Foundation and co-chaired the successful 2013 school parcel tax campaign. He coached youth soccer for 16 years, served on the Havens Elementary Site Council in the late 1990s, spent 10 years as a member (2 as president) of the board of the San Francisco Girls Chorus, and participates in annual student-led home-building trips to Mexico. He currently mentors East Bay college students in need, and is a member of the Dartmouth Career Advisory Group focused on athletes. He recently launched a career counseling service for rising and recent college graduates. Doug and his wife Mary have four children who have gone through the Piedmont schools. He attended public schools and has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Dartmouth College.
